Melissa Ridgely Covolesky. State Delegate District 9A?

Posted by David Keelan on Monday, February 13, 2006

It will be interesting to see how this develops.

She is a declared candidate. According to her website her campaign account is called “Friends of Melissa Ridgely Covolesky”, although the Board of Elections hasn’t posted the campaign account on their website.

I understand she is gunning for Warren Miller’s seat because he was “appointed” and not elected.

She has put up a very very nice website

www.votemelissa.com

However, their is nothing on the site unless you want to:

1. Read her 12 paragraph 1000 word biography (BTW, Someone should remind her that 9A also represents parts of Eastern Howard County ie Ellicott City, not just Western Howard County)
2. Find out about a few of her favorite things
3. Volunteer
4. Donate money

Issues, and News and Events are blank.

The site refers to her as State Delegate District 9A. Now, I am not sure what she is trying to convey here. It could be unintentionally misleading in that people may believe she is an incumbent. It would be more appropriate to say “Candidate for….”. Perhaps she thinks she has legitimate use of the title since Warren Miller was appointed and therefore doesn’t deserve the title either? I don’t know….

When creating a campaign entity for the purpose of raising funds campaign guidelines state:

A political committee may not use a name that is intended or operates to deceive people as to the political committee’s true nature or character.

As far as her campaign entity name “Friends of Melissa Ridgely Covolesky” it clearly does not mislead, but using the term State Delegate District 9A on her web site in the manner she does is seemingly out of context and can confuse the voters.

Lets see if she reconsiders the use of the term.

Hi, this is Melissa and I’ll make a few comments. My website is now fully operational with the issues posted (and of course will evolve with the campaign and by topics…) as well as an article from Sunday’s Baltimore Sun in the news section. Please feel free to check it out and check in periodically to see updates. The most useful websites are those that are flexible and dynamic – as I am sure you are aware. I’m sorry it wasn’t fully operational when you last visited.

On the matter of not saying “Candidate for…” on the website: I looked around at other various challenger sites and it seems to be the norm to say the position your running for with out the “Candidate” phrasing. You can check out some of the other HOCO candidates at HOCOGOP.com. (From Steele on down) I didn’t base it off of any aspect of Warren’s campaign. Yes, he is running for election for the first time but he is the sitting incumbent and I will be running as a challenger. I think you just read a little too much into it.

Yes, I agree, Western Howard County is not the appropriate term as my District does include the Northern, eastern, and even central, portions. I will make sure that it is clarified – My grandmother still lives in Ellicott City and I can just hear her correcting me now! LOL!

I don’t know why you didn’t find my campaign entity on the state board of elections site – It was formed some time ago and it was there when I looked. It is formed under the name of Friends to Elect Melissa Ridgely Covolesky and I have turned in my annual report as required in January. Can’t help you with that one…

Thanks for the comments about the web site design – I agree, my designer is fantastic and if anyone is looking for a professional site…:-) My thanks to all her hard work on behalf of my campaign.

Thanks for the time to comment –
    Melissa
