HoCo District 5

Posted by David Keelan on Monday, August 7, 2006

I have returned….from my wife’s Detroit family reunion.  Beautiful area, nice people, short trip.

Sounds like things in Howard County are the same.  I will get over to the fair grounds to watch the live political action and catch up with the GOP and the Dems.

In the mean time I did catch this article and David Wissing’s post.

On the issue of Wayne Livesay I can’t help but remember what Hayduke had to say about this back in February:

My dime store take on this is that Livesay’s the better candidate, regardless of who the party is supporting. On the local level, it’s all about name recognition, which Livesay’s got in spades. I don’t think his party switching will matter as much to the regular voters as it does to party insiders, who usually take their party way too seriously anyway. I think voters want someone they know and trust, and that’s what Livesay is.

I hope he is wrong, but he is probably right.  Unless Greg Fox can do what David Wissing says:

I’ve said before, and told Livesay directly, that if he decided to support Robey because they were friends, I would have had no problem with it. But the truth is when Livesay switched parties, he also claimed at the time he was doing to “clear his conscience” about the Republican’s position on gun control. Here is what he said back in 2002 according to the Howard County Times.

I think I have made it clear that I am a Greg Fox supporter haven’t I?  If not let me just set the record straight.  I am a Greg Fox supporter.  I think Senator Allan Kittleman is right and Greg will win 50 percent of the vote.

What has surprised me is what a strong campaigner Wayne Livesay is.  Charlie Feaga’s organization is really helping Livesay and his team.  Livesay is taking advantage of every opportunity available to him.  He is offering up assistance to other candidates with sign locations and offering to pass out their literature when he is campaigning.  He is saying some of the right things.

What concerns me about this is that he is taking Greg Fox off message.  What I mean is his tactics are distracting Greg Fox.  Greg has enough strengths to stand on and win this primary fight.  Livesay has enough weaknesses.

Livesay has enough problems from:

  • Party Switching
  • The Hatch Act
  • Sexual Harassment Suits
  • An unremarkable career as police chief
  • His recent comments on Comp-Lite

He agreed with the others that citizens should have the right to petition legislation such as Comp Lite — which rezoned dozens of parcels — to referendum, but he said, “I do not agree that voters should decide [zoning] cases they’re not familiar with.” That could hurt him among anti-development voters.

Again showing his lack of attention to details a la The Hatch Act.  He doesn’t understand that comp-lite was illegal and a complete affront to the citizens and the laws of this county.  This is NOT about citizens deciding zoning cases and he is absolutely dead wrong on this issue and his mentor Charlie Feaga is just as wrong.  Ulman and Guzzone illegally included properties in comp-lite and Feaga voted for it and Livesay thinks it is ok because citizens are too stupid to realize it.

Chris Merdon called him on it (whether directly or indirectly but when this quote was given I know that Chris knew what Livesay said and was concerned about it so I consider this a warning shot over the bow).

“Comp Lite will, I believe, decide a lot of races,” said Republican county executive candidate Christopher J. Merdon. ” I think a candidate who is against Comp Lite would be in a better position to win the election than somebody who supports it.”

Greg Fox needs to concentrate on one person and one person only.  Wayne Livesay.  Concentrate valuable energy and time any where else and he will loose focus on the primary mission (pardon the pun) and loose this race.  That would be bad for all of Howard County.  Don’t be distracted by non-issues that will only serve to distract your supporters.  Keep your supporters focused on you and Livesay – don’t allow them to be taken off message by things that won’t help you win.

Remember to stay on message and that Wayne Livesay is:

  • An Opportunist (switched to the GOP to run in a GOP district)
  • Doesn’t have the convictions of his beliefs (switched to the GOP to run in a GOP district even after he publically and loudly disowned the GOP)
  • Won’t endorse Sandy Schrader
  • A Republican in Name Only
  • Doesn’t trust that citizens know that comp-lite was a complete farse
  • Listens to Charlie Feaga too much
  • Precided over a police department leading to two sexual harrassment lawsuits and chalks it up to disgruntled employees (read the court records – they don’t sync up).
  • Doesn’t possess the grasp for details to be a legislator

My concern is that if we don’t stay on message and allow ourselves to be distracted then Wayne Livesay will win.

There is an alternative scenario.  If we find ourselves too far off track the GOP faithful may pull the lever for Jim Adams – which would be ok by me.

I’ve remained silent long enough believing that you would focus on the positive aspects of your support for Greg Fox rather than concentrating on bashing Wayne Livesay. Is it that Greg Fox is really a man of little substance in this race that forces you to try and distract everyone from the real qualifications of each candidate?

It is very obvious you do not know the facts about Wayne Livesay, nor do you want to know them. You make statements on this blog that you want people to believe as fact, when the real facts are ignored. Do you really believe everything you read in the paper? Maybe you do and you expect the readers of this blog to take what you say as fact also.

Wayne Livesay has led a nationally accreditated police agency that recently received worldwide recognition as a CALEA “Flagship” agency, a model for other police agencies around the world to emulate.

Wayne Livesay has faithfully served the citizens of this County for the past 34+ years and knows County government inside and out.

Wayne Livesay has demostrated proven leadership not only as a police chief but as the past president of the Maryland Chief’s of Police Association where he worked tirelessly with legislators throughout the state on various issues.

Wanye Livesay understands the budget process in Howard County having managed the agency with the second largest budget in County government.

Wayne Livesay understands the legislative processin Howard County having worked with our elected County officials on various legislation in several administrations.

Wayne Livesay knows District 5 and the concerns of the residents, where he has lived almost his entire life.

Wayne Livesay has earned the trust and respect and has a tremendous reputation with all facets of our residential and business community.

And there are so many more reasons that Wayne Livesay is more qualified to be elected to represent District 5!

I believe that the last statement you made will come true. You stated in yur post “My concern is that if we don’t stay on message and allow ourselves to be distracted then Wayne Livesay will win.” There is no doubt in my mind that Wayne Livesay will win and that all the smoke and mirrors and illusions you are trying to create in this race will disappear. I have faith in our Republician brothers and sisters to do the right thing and elect the individual with the best qualifications and experience to do the job. An individual who will devote his FULL TIME and attention to the job as County Council person and best represent the views of our District 5 residents, and that person is WAYNE LIVESAY, hands down!

In closing, I must admit that I certainly know that you feel pasionate about the entire election process and I respect that. However I think that the Republicans in this County want someone who can be fair an unbiased. I believe that Howard County Republicans will have a very difficult time voting for you as a member of the Republican Central Committee because your personal biases that will have a long lasting negative effect on the Republican Party in Howard County.

Censorship at it’s best I should have figured (I know, it’s your blog). You can dish it out but you can’t take it. If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen. If you won’t post my comments as a rebutal to yours, I will do it in another arena…..last chance! (I’ll leave out the part I wrote about my feelings about you…..here we go again:

My humble apologies! My initial post was on your blog and then it disappeared and i mistaken believed that you pulled it. I checked several times and it still was not there. When I sent my follow-up, my original post was back up on your blog. Again, please accept my apology for believing for a moment that you might censor responses to your site.

If there was ever a time for republicans to stay focused on a candidate alternative, now is the time. Wayne Livesay would not be good for Howard County, and no, I won’t provide details or experiences, (obviously quite negative).
