Remember Rick Tyler?

Posted by David Keelan on Wednesday, November 22, 2006

One of the best speakers, if not the best, we had at the Howard County Republican Club was Rick Tyler.  He really was fantastic.  Rick Tyler broadcasts a radio show, Leading the Majority, on the internet every Friday at 2PM.  It is worth a listen.  Rick is also Newt Gingrich’s spokesperson.  We hope to have him back in 2007.

Anyway, I bring up Rick because he wrote a letter to the editors of Fortune magazine regarding an interview Newt Gingrich gave to Fortune Magazine and that CNN pre-published.  The writer of the article calls Newt Gingrich a stealth presidential candidate.  I don’t get it.  If Newt was running for President he would say he was.  Why does Nina Easton insist on this game of “outing” Presidential candidates?  Why not take him at his word.

Rick responds as follows.

CNN has posted on its Web site an advance of Fortune Magazine Washington bureau chief Nina Easton’s longer piece on former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

The headline, “Gingrich ’08: The stealth candidate” leads the reader to believe that Gingrich is a candidate for the presidency in 2008. While there has been a lot of speculation by the media and others, Gingrich has been consistent and clear. He has no plans to run for president and will not even make a consideration about running until later next year.   The rest of Rick’s response.

What caused all the speculation?  This comment, which Newt said could be misinterpreted before he said it.

“I’m going to tell you something, and whether or not it’s plausible given the world you come out of is your problem,” he tells Fortune. “I am not ‘running’ for president. I am seeking to create a movement to win the future by offering a series of solutions so compelling that if the American people say I have to be president, it will happen.” So he’s running, only without yet formally saying so.

How I interpret this is that it isn’t out of the question that he would consider running.  Rick even makes that clear.  However, it would be more likely that he would run if the ideas and arguements he puts forth over the next few months creates a “draft Newt for President” movement.

I hope he runs.  America may decide he isn’t Presidential material (that is their business).  However, America needs to hear his message and his arguements.  The Republican Party needs a realistic and practical political conservative deep in the primary process to ensure that GOP comes around to its basic and simple principles.

Go Newt.
