Rumsfeld’s Memo of Options for Iraq War
Following is the text of a classified Nov. 6 memorandum that Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld sent to the White House suggesting new options in Iraq. The memorandum was sent one day before the midterm Congressional elections and two days before Mr. Rumsfeld resigned.
The Baltimore Sun Headline and Caption:
Rumsfeld’s pre-quitting memo urged Iraq shift
Document, confirmed by Pentagon, offered no specific recommendations
My first reaction to reading the BS’s (that’s Baltimore Sun, but in this case read what you like into the initials) headline was to wonder if Rumsfeld’s “criticism without specifics” would meet the same republican response as other critics — the “where’s their plan?” chant.
But, doing what thinking people ought to do – searching out the source material to make my own evaluation – I tracked down the memo posted on The York Times web site… and read it.
I suppose one could quibble about “how to define specific” – but Mr. Rumsfeld made a number of “recommendations” for consideration which would be advisable in examining alternative paths in Iraq … which is not quite the same thing The Balt Sun’s headline suggests.
In any event – it is interesting reading.
