Analysing a Lie

Posted by David Keelan on Tuesday, December 12, 2006

This is a very interesting post from Glenn Greenwald

Did Rahm Emanuel lie about his knowledge of Mark Foley? Yes.

At the height of the Mark Foley scandal in October — when Democrats were pounding Denny Hastert and company on a daily basis for having taken no action despite knowing about the emails sent by Foley to at least one page (and for lying about their past knowledge) — Democratic Congressman (and DCCC Chair) Rahm Emanuel went on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos (along with GOP Rep. Adam Putnam). I haven’t been able to find a full transcript, but the full video is here, and this article provides an account of the segment.

Stephanopoulos explicitly asked Emanuel: “I just want to ask you plainly — did you or your staff know anything about these emails or instant messages before they came out?”

This exchange goes on and on and on with Emanuel denying any knowledge what so ever.

It is now being reported by CNN that not only was the DCCC’s Burton aware of the e-mails in 2005, but so, too, was Emanuel:

The head of the House Democrats’ campaign committee, Rep. Rahm Emanuel, had heard of former Rep. Mark Foley’s inappropriate e-mails to a former male page a year before they became public, a campaign committee aide told CNN. . . .

What did you expect.  The guy got his training in the Clinton White House.

  1. In addition to what (i agree) appears to be a pretty bold faced lie —- and I’m not buying the song and dance about staff having it or distributing it without the member’s knowledge —

    — the whole question of the timing of the “righteous indignation” and disclosures is at least noteworthy.

Granted, it was not a case of “national security” and it doesn’t appear any individual’s “life or limb” was ever in danger …. and an argument can be made that various procedures had to run their course. thank goodness – because you have to wonder how bad the offense has to be before it is beyond this kind of manipulation.

However, it is still extremely distasteful to me to “sit on” information about violations of rules/laws until exposing them is convenient for the exposer.

I gather that HoCoBlog may not be the most avid reader of DailyKos and other liberal mega-blogs, but there is a bloodbath between the DLC-Carville-Emanuel DC-centric corps of (serially sub-competent) consultants and the unwashed netroots rabble. Rahm Emanuel infuriated a lot of liberal activists by taking sides in a Chicago area race for Tammy Duckworth, then dumping an unbelievable amount of DCCC money into her campaign, which she then lost to the Republican.

It’s not really about left vs. center as insider consultants vs. grassroots. Rahm made his millions – literally – as a uber-connected bond trader and is connected with big Democratic money. Seems to hate Howard Dean out of jealousy. So the Schadenfreude of grassroots Democrats upon this stain upon Congressman Emanuel may be thicker than that of his Republican opponents.

Good morning David. Sorry I am using this space, but sommething caught my eye when I looked at the Howard County Republican Party web page.

“Special Notice” Republicans believe every day is Fourth of July (does’t that have something to do with something that Jefferson, the first leader of the what is now Democrate party, wrote.) and the Democrates believe every day is April 15th ( Wasn’t it Honest Abe, what’s his name, who was responsible for the Internal Revenue act of 1862 – I think it had something to do with taxing American Citizens on their income). Don’t you just love History. Enjoy the day.
