Still Seeking 15 Good Men

Posted by David Keelan on Monday, January 8, 2007

I am looking for 15 good men.  Specifically, I am looking for 15 good Irish Catholic men, and who are not less than 16 years of age to help start an Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH)  Division in Howard County.

I have been a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for about 10 years.  I joined an AOH Division in Baltimore city because I lived in the city at the time.  Being a member of the AOH led directly to my involvement in the Baltimore St. Patrick Parade and other Irish events.  Best of all I have met some great people over the last 10 years.

Now that I live in Howard County I would like to start a division here.  Gine that there are 38,000 Irish Americans in Howard County (about 15% of the entire population) I am hopeful that at least 15 of those people would be interested in starting an AOH division here in the County.   The fact that so many Irish Americans live in Howard County is probably why the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) has been so successful here in Howard County.

What is the AOH?

The Ancient Order of Hibernians is a Catholic, Irish-American fraternal organization founded in New York City in 1836.  The LAOH was founded in Nebraska in 1894.

The primary purposes of the Organization are:

  1. To promote Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity among members.
  2. To uphold and sustain loyalty to the government of the United States of America by members living here in America, or whatever government under which its members may be citizens.
  3. To aid and advance by all legitimate means, the aspirations and endeavors of the Irish people to complete and absolute independence.
  4. To foster the ideals and cultivate the history and traditions of the Irish people throughout the world.

How we achieve our purpose differs from State to State and Division to Division.  Most of the L/AOH divisions in Maryland participate in two major events every year.  The St. Patrick Day Parade and the Irish Festival (the real one).  They are not the only Irish organizations in Maryland (Police Emerald Society, Fire Emerald Society, Hibernian Society, Friendly Sons, and others).  Each AOH division also supports local charities and promotes Irish culture in their community.

It is also a good excuse to get out of the house one night a week and enjoy a pint with your mates.

David, there will be at least 15 good men, as well as 15 good women from the Western Democrat Club at the George Howard Building, Thursday, 1/11/07, 7:00 p.m., Your invited to join us.

  2. Are they Irish Catholic? Please refer the women to the LAOH.

Constance Gore-Booth (Countess Markievicz) was sentenced to death for her role in the 1916 Rising in Ireland. Bernadette Devlin McAliskey has been a leading advocate for civil rights in Ireland. Both Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese have served Ireland as President. Yet today, the AOH still refuses to admit women. How sad…

  4. Maybe it is sad. I don’t ever recal Mary McAleese (I have had the pleasure of meeting her) asking to join the AOH. In addition, the women of the LAOH I know (and I know a lot of them) would rather be left to their own devices rather than join with the AOH.

I don’t believe that every organization has to include men and I don’t believe that every organization has to include women. It is political correctness running wild.

Additionally, the AOH does not hold a lock on Irish community organizations. Men and women of Irish heritage have many many opportunities to work together in other organizations. That is not to mention that the LAOH and AOH work collaboratively on many issues.
