I’m unaware of anything they will do that will be of any value

From the Examiner, Pelosi Seeks Global Warming Committee

The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) right ater congratulating the new Govenor of California, Martin O’Malley is forming a special committee to push global warming legislation.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said the committee would hold hearings and recommend legislation on how to reduce greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide generated by fossil fuels, that most scientists blame for a gradual warming of the earth’s climate.

“I promise to do everything in my power to achieve energy independence … and to stop global warming,”

Well, not everyone is agrees that a special committee is the best way to go:

“We should probably name it the committee on world travel and junkets,”

“We’re just empowering a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs to go around and make speeches and make commitments that will be very difficult to honor,”

“They’re going to get under the feet of and interfere with those who are trying to do a decent job of legislating,”

“I’m unaware of anything they will do that will be of any value.”

Who said this? A CEO from an evil “Big Oil” company or one of thier paid scientists? Jack Abramoff? Rush Limbaugh?

Nope, it was not even a Republican.

Those quotes came from an AP interview with Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., the longest serving house member and chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which overseas the Clean Air Act and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Well, what does Dingell suggest be done to combat global warming? Other than useless rhetoric, he did not put forth a single criticism of the committee, yet he clearly thinks they will be ineffective. Why will they be ineffective? What would he do instead? Global Warming is a real problem that should be addressed.

Maybe we could follow the Republican lead. In July 2003 Republican Senator Inhofe stated on the floor of Congress that global warming is the “greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.” Inhofe is from Oklahoma. I wonder where he gets his money.

Bush has done a good job of showing the world America’s committment to keeping our Earth healthy. He announced the Climate Change Plan in February 2002 that calls for an 18% reduction of greenhouse gas “intensity” by 2012. This translates into a 14% increase in greenhouse gas emissions in that period.

Republicans may think that global warming is a joke. Every environmental scientist in the world, except the one who heads Bush’s energy department, agree that global warming is a serious problem that must be addressed by all nations now.

There is a fairly obvious reason why Dingell doesn’t want a new committee on energy independence and global warming – it would cut into his turf as Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Maybe he thinks global warming is not a man-made problem, or maybe he thinks that his committee can tackle the issue, but I bet a significant reason for him saying “I’m unaware of anything [the new committee] will do that will be of any value” is because he doesn’t want to lose any power as a committee chair.

Dingell is from Michigan, home to auto manufacturers. This explains the opposition to global warming measures.
