Columbia Elections

Posted by David Keelan on Friday, April 20, 2007

I know Evan Coren and Ian Kennedy to be thoughtful, deliberate, and serious people.  Now I don’t always agree with them.  If you read this blog you probably read their blogs – so you would know that already.  However, we do agree more often than not and I respect them for their usually sound arguements (Tom Birkhouse might weigh in here so I need to be careful – Tom if you read this be nice.)  So, if it matters at all I endorse both Ian and Evan.  They will inject much needed new energy, vigor, ideas, and civility into the Columbia Council.

As far as Barbara Russell goes, I admire her for standing up and supporting a County Executive candidate and refusing to backdown when confronted by ill informed people.  She had every right to do what she did and (from an IRS perspective) she didn’t jeopardize anyone person or organization in doing so.  I understood this right away (and I am not very smart) but a past and current candidate for Columbia Council did not.  If he couldn’t grasp this fact nor take the time to read the Columbia Association Charter before leveling charges of misconduct against members of the Council then it is a stretch for me to believe that Bill Santos has the abilities necessary to serve on the Columbia Council.  I think it is likely he will continue to be reckless with his words and deeds and only create further acrimony on the Council.  Something that no one needs more of – it should stop.

If Ms. Russell loses to Ian Kennedy I am certain she will remain engaged and active in the community and will make an even larger contribution to the community by serving elsewhere.

Wow, David. Thanks for the endorsement and you kind words. In elections decided by as few votes as these, every little bit counts and this is much appreciated. I guess we’ll see what happens tomorrow.

Nice post David. I agree with you, especially about Evan.

I disagree as to your comment, in reference to yourself, your a very intelligent person and that is what makes this blog one of the best.

Of course you have had you moments, but they were not a measure of your intelligence, I think you were a little misguided, but then like the rest of us you are human.

    Keep up the good work.

I won! 202 to 181. Interesting but I am told my opponent Jason led 7 to 1 in the 80 or so absentee ballots that were cast. I really appreciate the hard work all my volunteers put in! I could not have done it without them!

Jim, as one of my hardest working volunteers, I really want to thank you for all your amazing work!

  4. Congratulations Evan,

Ian I am sorry you didn’t win. Keep up the effort. We need people like you serving in public office.

I know this after the election results have been determined, but wanted to throw it out there anyway. I know you were only playing with your reference to me. I feel that Hayduke is an intelligent person, which is part of the reason why I fail to understand some of the stances he takes. Someone of his capabilities (he is very astutue on a variety of topics) should not be so easily fooled into supporting certain policy initiatives. If he’s not being fooled, then he’s purposely ignoring facts that counter certain stances that he takes/supports. If I was confronted with damning evidence against my position/belief, at some point I would have to acknowledge that I could be off the mark (for example, I voted for Bush but am not pleased with everything he’s done, or in some cases, not done, so I don’t defend Bush on every policy).

Much has been made of my run-ins with Hayduke. It’s not as personal as people would want to believe. I just want him to live up to his intelligence level instead of playing games with the facts/truth.

    I don’t think that’s an unreasonable expectation.

Deleting things you disapprove of now, are you?

  8. I always delete the spam that gets through the spam filter. Yeah Yeah, if you want to read pornography, get rich quick schemes, or about physical enhancements, or discounts on Viagra you will have to read about them else where.
